Mid Shore Chaplaincy Ministries

Mid-Shore Chaplaincy Ministries was founded by Rev. William Reaver and Rev. James L. Spiker to provide ministry services to those in Talbot County Detention Center. It is registered with the State of Maryland and the IRS as a non-profit (501-C-3) organization.

In March of 1994, Jim approached Warden DiNisio with the proposal to provide one-on-one Pastoral Counseling for those individuals who request it. With his approval and the approval of the Talbot County Council, Jim is present in a meeting room every Monday and Friday at 9:00 am til the last couseling session.

Please keep these meetings in prayer. Keep me in your prayers. This keeps me in the detention center on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

This ministry provides one-on-one teaching in the Experiencing God (Henry Blackaby) and the Alpha Series (John Glenn).

Jim also visits relatives upon the request and mutual consent of those parties not incarcerated. Visitation is very important to relatives. There are many phone calls, letter writing and visiting other correctional institutes. Jim is also known to visit the Courts where Judge Adkins and Judge Campen preside. This is for two purposes :

  1. To be a physical presence (scheduling permitting) to those who have sought counseling.
  2. To remind me to pray for our judicial system.

We attend the different Christian Churches (47 listed in the Yellow Pages) throughout the Talbot County to:

  1. Encourage the Church leadership to be active in prison ministry of some kind, to include a "Structured Aftercare Program" (in which Jim can teach to interested church leadership) for those released from the detention center.
  2. To financially support this ministry (a mission's ministry in our own back yard).

The finances help to purchase books, Bibles, Christian reading materials and help offset the costs of providing such a ministry. Lately the finances have decreased while the ministry needs have increased. I don't know what it takes to reach the leadership of each of our Christian churches to financially support this Bible-Believing Christian Prison Ministry in the Talbot County. I don't go around to the churches begging for money. I don't believe God nor his ministers must beg for income; but I do believe that we must make other churches aware of the need for financial backing so they may have an opportunity to share in the expenses and function of the ministry.

Mid-Shore Chaplaincy Ministries receives monthly support from the following churches:

  1. Easton Church of the Brethren

There are individuals who support this ministry, without which we could not provide all the necessary literature within the detention center. The greatest contribution is from CONSTRUCTION UNLIMITED, INC. The company is owned and operated by caring Christians who give back to the community. Jim works as their Chief Financial Officer full time but is given the time required to provide the various ministries within the community, usually at the company's expense.
We are always looking for churches that want to financially support a mission's ministry.

Mid-Shore Chaplaincy Ministries has a board of six people listed as follows:

  1. Rev. James L. Spiker, President
  2. Rev. William D. Reaver, Vice President
  3. June L. Spiker, Secretary
  4. Robert L. Shumate, Treasurer
  5. Francis Gray

We also have liasons to represent the following churches (If your Church would like to have a representative liason please contact us):

Bruce Butler - Easton Church of the Brethren

If your church Pastor/Leadership would like to learn more about how they can support a Bible-Believing based Mission's Ministry in your own back yard, or if you would like to become actively involved in some kind of prison ministry through your church, or your Pastor would like a guest speaker (Jim has filled the pulpit in several churches in this Talbot County Area, list is following), please contact me at the above numbers.
